The Tudge Family History Site.

Latest Information.

28.4.02

Although there have been no changes on this page for over a year, much has in fact happened. Firstly, many thanks to all those who have written giving new details of Tudges from all over the world. All the information given has been entered into the main GEDCOM file which you can access from the main page. For those who do not know what a GEDCOM file is, it is a special sort of computer file which is used by genealogists all over the world for moving genealogical information from one type of family history program to another. Most genealogy programs will have an "import" facility for reading GEDCOM files. If you take information from the GEDCOM file on this site you MUST do your own verification of the details. I only enter what people tell me - just so there is a record kept somewhere of all the different snippets of information received. I do pass the "new" information received to Jeff Tudge.

Many people have used my family tree in their researches. Both Jeff Tudge (who has provided a great deal of information for this web site) and I, are broadly researching the same family tree. We have both drawn up our family trees and both can be found on this website. Unfortunately there are differences in the two trees!!! Jeff tends to be ruthless in his research, he accepts nothing as definate, until he can PROVE it's validity. I on the other hand am totally lazy, keep few notes and tend to be a bit sloppy in my work (my excuse is that I never EVER dreamt that my research would be seen by all these people via the web and it was only intended as a personal hobby with the information only being seen by my near relatives). All the above, is a round about way of saying that if you spot differences between Jeff and my own tree's, then Jeff's is the most likely to be correct!!!! Until now, I've just never bothered really comparing the two in detail and liasing with Jeff to sort out the differences. One day perhaps!!!

The UK GRO Tudge births indexes are now available - well sort of!!! Those who have worked to obtain this information, are somewhat reluctant to put the full details on to the Internet, as giving the birth information of people still living could be fraught with problems, as it can be misused by credit card/passport fraudsters. Any information you need from these indexes can be obtained from either myself or Jeff Tudge after we have been satisfied that you are genuinely researching the Tudge family. The full list can be supplied either by e-mail or even via a Web page when we are sure it will not be misused by the researcher (and as we know many of you personally this should prove no problem). I know this is not what you were all expecting, but I do agree with the sentiments expressed by one member of the group on the subject, and for the time being at least the list will not be available for general consumption.

This months big addition to the site is Jeff & Anita Tudges 1841-1891 census file. It's a big file (1.2Mb) but well worth downloading (and perhaps then saving the file on your own computer for future use). Jeff has not only listed all the Tudges he's come across in his census investigations, but he's also cross referenced this information with other data he has on those same individuals. At the end of the day you end up with this census file plus a load of other extra information. This file is superb and well worth the time taken to download it. The older census files have now been superceded and have been removed from this web site.

If YOU ......... yes YOU ............ have ANY information, even an odd exact birth date, marriage date etc please let Jeff Tudge know. You can e-mail him here.

If YOU use this site, or if you have ANY information about Tudges (even your name, parents names, grandparents ....... anything) please get in touch. There are still many branches of the family, even in recent times that we still know nothing about, so any bit of information helps. Either let Jeff or myself know. Anything I learn goes into the GEDCOM file, anything Jeff learns goes into one of his spreadsheets - which eventually end up on this site. Please help!

The remainder of the GRO birth indexes should be on this site soon .............. then we'll try to finish the deaths indexes.

Over the past few months I've added a considerable amount of information to the combined Tudge GEDCOM file, this information being obtained from information sent to me by Tudge family members. So far so good BUT ........................ under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should this GEDCOM file be considered as 100% fact. It is merely a compendium of all the latest information collected from various sources including Tudge family members. All the information has NOT BEEN VERIFIED. Please bear this in mind when doing your research. Hopefully, as new facts come to light any errors in the GEDCOM file will be ammended. Don't forget ............ use the GEDCOM file as a GUIDE, not as FACT.

Still no news about when the UK birth indexes from 1919 will be completed on this site. The man doing this work for me doesn't get paid but does the research in between his other paid work. Have patience, he's never let me down yet, and the missing information will be put on the website just as soon as it arrives (and as soon as I can type it up).

I cannot thank all those who have sent in Tudge family information enough. The growth of information on this Web site in such a short space of time has amazed me. However, despite what you may imagine, I am quite definately NOT the "fount of all knowledge" on the subject, I'm merely the bloke who has set up this web site to disseminate some of the information available. There are others involved in the family research (hi Jeff & Anita Tudge!!!!) who not only have far more knowledge than me but also have less addled brains than me. Thanks to everyone for their help.

There is apparently a Tudge coat of arms! The mind boggles. Before anyone writes to ask where one can obtain a family shield from, the address is:

http://www.family-name.co.uk/

(thanks to Ray Tudge for this information). It'll cost you few pounds or dollars to put up your shield!!!!

I'll let you all know if there's any further news and I'll put a message on the Tudge surname message board (on Ancestry.com) when the births index is finished.

Thanks to a huge typing effort by Jeff & Anita Tudge over the last couple of days, the entire UK GRO Marriage Indexes from 1837 to 1976 are now on this web site. Many thanks to both of them.

As well as the complete marriage indexes on the site, the death indexes now run from 1837 to 1945 and the births go from 1837 to 1918. I will be arranging for the births from 1919 to be available within the next few months. I can't believe that in the space a couple of months we now have almost the entire Tudge information from all the UK General Record Office records here on the site. Well done to all involved.

1.10.00

I now have the entire UK GRO Marriages Indexes for everyone with the surname Tudge from 1837 to 1976! It will take me some considerable time to transfer all this information to Excel and then into Web format so you will need patience!!!! In the meantime if you want any info from these indexes or want me to do a quick search for something specific, then please let me know. You can reach me at:

d.lane@btinternet.com

Now that the marriage indexes are complete, my next step will be to try to compile the complete Tudge UK GRO Indexes for putting onto the Web. Thank goodness others have provided some information on both births and marriages, it makes my task somewhat easier. Before anyone asks how long it will take to have both the complete births and the marriages indexes on the Web page, the quick answer is .... I've no idea ............ it depends on whether I feel like doing a lot of research and typing. At present I'm fairly busy on other things (astronomy degree course, paragliding course etc etc) so Tudge Family History has a fairly low priority just for the time being. Don't worry, I'll get round to it. Sorry for any delay!

This site has grown from being an idea a few weeks ago, to a superb resource for all Tudge Family History Researchers. It has grown as a direct result of others being willing to share their hard earned information with the rest of us. Their help is very much appreciated not only by myself, but also by all others reading this page. Thanks everyone.

I will attempt to put any information anyone sends about Tudges on to this page. There will be a great deal of duplication of information but this is a distinct advantage and not a drawback. Different people read and transcribe the same information in different ways and when comparing two different researchers information, it is already apparant that errors (or differences) are appearing. For this reason I will continue to list duplicate data, until such a time that we can prove that this or that document definately says this or that.

Please bear in mind the warning on the first page of this web site. Only use the information here as a GUIDE, the transcribers are not infallible and mistakes are not only possible but likely. Anyone who has poured for hours over microfilm readers will know exactly what I mean! One other thing, please remember that the date of entry in the GRO Indexes are the date an event was REGISTERED. This may be different from the date of the event.

The latest information to be put on the site is courtesy of Dilys Dawson and Jeff Tudge and his wife Anita. Jeffs monumental work on Tudges is absolutely superb and fills in many gaps for many of us in our work. To everyone who has contributed, many thanks.

What information do we now need? I will take me a few days to get all the information that I have so far received onto this web page but I'll do my best! Once this is done, Jeff Tudge points out that the most valuable information that we do not yet have, would be the UK Tudge records from the GRO Indexes covering the marriages from 1919 to 2000 plus the deaths from 1946 to 2000. I wonder if anyone already has this information?

That's enough for now. Remember, if you make use of any information on these pages please show your appreciation by letting US have any information YOU have. Even if you only know of the odd ancestor who was a Tudge, please let me have this information and I'll enter it on to this site in some format or another even if it only appears as an isolated and unrelated Tudge in the GEDCOM file.
